Go in person, though, don't just call them. Ask for the manager and explain your project. Most will donate something. I wouldn't ask for any particular item, just let them donate what they want. You wouldn't believe all the free stuff they'll give you if they know it's going for a neighborood kids group. Alot of time they will donate it gets people to there property with potential for them to stay again as a paying guest, plus its a tax right off.
