well this is what i would do, take some really pitiful pictures, and write a little story at the bottom about the rescue, and the needs, make them into flyers, and take them to places, like malls, beauty shops, anywere you can think of,
you can set up a bank account just for rescue funds.
also a lot bussinesses donate items for fund raising all you have to do is ask for a donation.
if you get alot of stuff its also a great idea to make some raffle tickets, and put a package together to raffle off, then you can get the money right away...
good luck! i hope this helps some
References :
Contact your local school district about having a fundraiser where a class adopts one or more of the animals for a science project that last the whole school year. At the school that my neice goes to they raffle of baskets that local business and the PTO have put together. Change drive or bottle drive with the local boy &girl scouts. Ask the local fire department about their help with a dinner auction. If you have friends or family into doing crafts raffle off a craft items .
References :
car smash
bake sale
car wash
spaghetti dinner(or some kind of thing like that)
bonfire
bingo night(good for older people)

thats all i have right now but if i think of more i will be sure to let you know!
References :
get added to gift.com, people can raise money for you while they shop.

What about a concert? Look for some local bands that would be willing to pay for free (for exposure) and sell tickets.
References :
Perhaps trying some sort of group selling would work for you. As a former Avon rep. I organized many fundraisers for various organizations. I also know that other companies similiar to Avon, or other home party type businesses, offer fundraisers as well (Partylite, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, etc.).
